Meet the team

Michael Schumacher, PhD is the principal investigator of the lab. He received his doctorate in Systems Biology & Physiology from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and continued his post-doctoral training at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. His lab moved to Stanford in 2026.
Katerin Joachin, BS is a PhD student in the Schumacher Lab and is focused on understanding how deep crypt secretory cells in the colon regulate stem cell responses in inflammation.
Sebastian Leung is a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine intern and studies how a population of cells marked by Fgfbp1 in the intestine is regulated by cellular signals and inflammatory stimuli.
Recruiting at the post-doctoral level, please inquire.
Alumni

Alexa Gramajo worked as a USC undergraduate in the Schumacher lab. She developed a project using lipopolysaccharide injection as a model of stem cell loss and recovery in the intestine to understand the regulation of Fgfbp1+ cells. Alexa received an AGA SURF fellowship award to support this work.
Jenny Shevchenko worked as a research technician in the Schumacher lab where she characterized the Fgfbp1+ response in the LPS-model of stem cell loss and recovery. Jenny presented this work as a platform talk at Digestive Disease Week 2026.
Reem Gandhi performed her Masters degree internship work in Schumacher lab. She focused on understanding how the GLP1RA medication semaglutide controls stem cell populations throughout the gastrointestinal tract. She presented her work as an abstract of distinction at the Crohn's and Colitis Congress 2026.
Seth Pickens trained with the Schumacher lab as an LA-HIP high school student before matriculating to USC. His project was focused on understand how the GLP1RA semaglutide regulates the gastric epithelium and presented his work at SCCUR 2025.
